21 Things About Me

1. I am from Lima, Peru. This is a country that must be on your top 10 places to visit. It's just beautiful!

2. I currently live in Pearland, just 10 miles from Downtown Houston. I bet your Grandma lives there.

3. My guilty pleasure is So You Think You Can Dance show. I like it better than Dancing with the Stars.

4. For five years (age 11 to 16) I played the piano. My mother wanted me to enter a conservatory, but that changed when we migrated to United States looking for a brighter future.

5. Growing up, I didn't dance as many people think I have done for all my life. Even right after I graduated college, I didn't dance once. I was just too busy trying to finish my pre-med major while being in the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M University

6. A girl got me into dancing. I liked her so much, I was willing to do anything to impress her. We started with Ballroom from 2000 to 2003.
7. In the beginning, I didn't like Salsa one bit just because my parents liked it so much. I actually discover Salsa dancing in 2003 at a birthday party. I just saw Mike and Tali dance, and something sparked my interest. They were my very first instructors. 

8. In Summer of 2005, I went Salsa crazy, addicted, junkie, whatever you call it. I would go dancing every night of the week except Mondays. My favorite spot was Taco Milagro in Kirby and Westheimer.

9. I started having more dancing friends than non-dancing friends. My non-dancing friends thought I was crazy spending almost 20 hours a week dancing. 

10. In June 2007, my birthday month, I founded Latin Dance Factory after several people encouraged me to teach my style of dancing.

11. My first business card was a napkin with my name and phone number on it.

12. Latin Dance Factory is actually my brand new home that I bought in Shadow Creek Ranch after my old home flooded and I almost lost everything.

13. I love animals. I adopted a little street dog and named him Mambo. He dances on4 =) 

14. I hold a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Biology and a Masters of Public Health Degree in Epidemiology. I got into scientific research because my mom got diagnosed with cancer and she entered into new therapeutics trials that helped her extend her life. 

15. I love teaching. I have been teaching since College. I started tutoring Algebra, Trigonometry and Calculus. Later I was teaching Physics, Biology, and Chemistry. When I was in my Master's Program is was nominated Teacher Assistant of the Year - 2 years in the the row. I taught Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Global Health to graduate students.

16. Being in the clinical research field taught me how to analyze complex problems, how to break down pathways into simpler gradual processes, how to communicate more effectively with students, patients, and colleagues, and how to motivate people to keep fighting.

17. Another of my passions is traveling. I tend to combine that pleasure with dancing by attending several Salsa, Kizomba, and Bachata Congresses around the US and the World.

18. I have taught dancing in several places outside Houston and Pearland. These include: Lubbock, College Station, Puerto Rico, Atlanta, Tennessee, Florida, and Madrid, Spain. I have also being invited to teach in France, Germany, and Greece.

19. We created a few Salsa applications for your iPhone so that you can learn on the go. The apps were positively featured on The New York Times on Nov 30th 2011. 

20. I believe that everyone - no matter how uncoordinated and how many left feet they have should get into dancing. It will change your life if you just give it a chance. 

21. I hope to dance until my last days on this earth. It is my addiction and my gift. I want to pass it down to my children when that times comes. I want to visit every Salsa, Bachata, Kizomba Congress or Festival there is in the world!
